This Charming Massachusetts Tea Room Is Much More Than Tea
The best things in life are those unexpected moments or discoveries. Over the weekend, on a drive to Cape Cod with my parents it happened. We stopped to find somewhere for lunch and discovered this charming Massachusetts tea room that’s much more than tea.
Here I am, several days later still thinking about this sweet spot. My mother and I couldn’t get over how lovely this Massachusetts tea room was. Dad was just happy to get lunch.
Tea In Sandwich
It’s a long drive from Southern Connecticut to Orleans, Massachusetts, so we had to stop for a bite. I got off at the first exit in Sandwich, after crossing the Sagamore Bridge on Cape Cod. If your vacation spot is in Orleans or the lower Cape, you never go to Sandwich. It feels like a million miles away. But, we were sure glad our tummies led us here, on the way there.
I took a left off the exit and we just started driving toward Historic Downtown Sandwich (as the signs indicated). There, on the right side we saw a few cars going into a parking lot. We followed and literally stumbled upon The Tea Room.
The History Of This Massachusetts Tea Room- Much More Than Tea
Where the Dunbar House Tea Room and Wine Bar now sits has been a site “favored from the time the first European settlers moved onto the Cape in the 1630s, according to their website. Can you imagine that in these 250 years the Dunbar House, situated next to the Tea Room, has only had 6 owners?
It was in the 1920s that Colonel Henry Dunbar bought the place and added a carriage house and billiard room. While his wife created a picturesque garden. Those new additions eventually led to the Tea Room.
Much More Than What’s In Your Cup
There’s a beautiful sense of tradition at the Tea Room, yet it’s completely modernized. Yes, you can experience a true traditional 3 tier homemade afternoon tea with tasty items like finger sandwiches, baked goods and fresh fruit.
The Tea Room also offers full lunches and brunches, complete with wine, beer, cocktails and, of course, tea. Every item we sampled at lunch was simple perfect, from the mini beef wellington appetizers to the roasted turkey sandwich with roasted potatoes. I highly recommend their house tea, Dunbar Tea. It’s delicious blend of black tea, cranberry & almond essence and it is so aromatic and delicious.
Honestly, we found the Tea Room to be a uniquely special place and an experience we will never forget. I can’t wait to return and try some of their other delicacies.
