Grilled Cheese Sandwiches Are America’s Ultimate Treat
America sure knows how to handle its grilled cheese sandwiches!
In fact, we’re devouring so many of these cheesy delights that we could fill almost 900 Olympic-sized swimming pools with them.
What is it about grilled cheese?
According to a Pepperidge Farm poll of 5,000 adults across the nation, the average person here is gobbling down a whopping 36 grilled cheese sandwiches every year.
If everyone kept up this cheesy pace, we’d have enough sandwiches to cover an astonishing 29,180 football fields.
But let’s dive deeper into the grilled cheese obsession.
It seems like we’re turning to these sandwiches for all sorts of occasions. Whether it’s for a quick and easy weekday meal, to satisfy those sudden cravings, or to cozy up on a rainy day, grilled cheese is the ultimate comfort food.
And guess what? Turns out, most folks agree that the best place to enjoy a grilled cheese is right at home. No surprise there! Plus, lunchtime seems to be the prime time for indulging in this cheesy delight.
Different states have different takes on the perfect grilled cheese.
For instance, while Mississippi likes to kick off their day with a cheesy breakfast, Oregon prefers to wrap up their nights with a late-night cheesy snack.
And let’s not even get started on the butter debate. While some states swear by buttering just the inside of the sandwich, others insist on buttering both inside and out.
When it comes to fillings, the options are endless. From classic ham and bacon to the more adventurous fresh tomatoes, everyone seems to have their own favorite twist on the classic grilled cheese.
But perhaps the most crucial element of all is the bread.
It’s got to toast just right ā crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, and thick enough to hold all that cheesy goodness together. And while most of us agree on white bread as the go-to choice, the level of toastiness is a hot topic of debate.
So, whether you like your grilled cheese lightly toasted or thoroughly burnt, one thing’s for sure ā there’s no wrong way to enjoy this beloved American classic. So go ahead, grab some bread, butter, and cheese, and get toasting.
Here’s a breakdown:
Most agreed butter was the preferred condiment to use in the sandwich (70%), but several states argued how it should be used. California (30%), Georgia (40%), New Jersey (32%), North Carolina (28%), Pennsylvania (30%), South Carolina (29%) and Virginia (28%) all prefer to butter just the inside of the sandwich.
Connecticut (31%), Hawaii (33%), Maryland (31%), Mississippi (29%) and Utah (29%) all prefer to butter the inside and outside.
There was also plenty of debate on what goes in their grilled cheese. Ham (38%) and bacon (35%) were most popular throughout most states.
Many were purists, opting to only use cheese: Alabama (34%), Arkansas (42%), Iowa (39%), Kentucky (37%), Minnesota (37%), Ohio (32%), Tennessee (41%) and Wyoming (47%).
Rhode Island stood out for its preference: choosing fresh tomatoes (44%) over everything else.
