Massachusetts Sues Instagram Because Your Kids Are Messed Up
The headline Massachusetts Sues Instagram is an unbelievable story for many reasons. First, we are probably reading this on our social media. It’s like drinking our morning coffee, checking our phone seeing that coffee is bad for us. Life has a way of overhauling itself every twenty years.
Parent Company Of Facebook, Instagram Meta Sued
Isn’t it ironic that Massachusetts, the very state that gave birth to Facebook, is now suing the parent company Meta, almost 20 years later. According to WCVB, the attorney general is joining other states in suing Meta.
“Kids and teenagers are suffering from record levels of poor mental health and social media companies like Meta are to blame,” said New York Attorney General Letitia James, who joined in the federal lawsuit. “Meta has profited from children’s pain by intentionally designing its platforms with manipulative features that make children addicted to their platforms while lowering their self-esteem.”
So far 42 states have filed similar lawsuits. Meta fired back saying there are tools are designed for those users under 16, like privacy settings.
Who Should Parent Your Kids?
I remember a time when a state would focus on controling rent costs, gas costs, electric costs, broken roads, and of course safety. We’ve seen the studies that over exposure to social media hurts everyone, including impressionable children. But, once you let the state tell you what we or our kids can read, view, listen to, drive to, eat and drink, where does it stop? Before you know it, they will control what the kids are learning in school. Oh, wait.
Mark Zuckerberg Political Donations Ended In 2020
According to an April 2020 New York Times report, also reported by NBC, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, ended a $400,000,000 political grant program that is basically a political donations vehicle. As Massachusetts sues Instagram, the timing seems interesting.
I hope I’m wrong, and something good comes out of this lawsuit. I say let’s leave our messed up kids to us messed up parents.
