The music fans of the 1990’s decade are rejoicing as the I Love the 90s Tour, hits the Big E Sunday night October 1! On The Big E area stage you’ll see Vanilla Ice, Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, Montell Jordan and Rob Base. Let’s take a look at the interesting and complicated music decade we called, the 90’s!
1990’s Music Was Different
Unlike most of the decades we have experienced, the 90’s music decade featured music styles that experts say was extreme. Another word for extreme, was edgy.
The Extremes Music Period
Music experts that get paid to study music styles over the years, have analyzed the 90’s to have two styles: edgy Alternative Rock or Grunge Rock. On the other side of the spectrum, there was edgy Hip Hop or Rhythm.
Bands that fit the extreme Alternative Rock style of the 90’s included:
Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Stone Temple Pilots and Soundgarden to name a few. The pop side of the Alt Rock style included Alanis Moresette, Goo Goo Dolls and Greenday.
Bands that fit the extreme Hip Hop or Rhythm style of the 90’s include:
Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, Snoop Dogg, Tupac, Eminem, and Missy Elliott. The pop side of the Hip Hop, and Rhythm style included Vanilla Ice, Montell Jordan, TLC, and Boston’s Bell Biv Devoe.
In the early 1990’s this extreme period of music lacked a deep list of mainstream popular music, which hurt mainstream Top 40 Hit stations. The extreme rock and hip hop really didn’t fit on Top 40, causing listenership to dwindle in the 90’s.
But by the late 90s early and 2000’s rhythm artists like Britney Spears, JLO, JZ and Nelly began to emerge. Their more mainstream, pop rhythm sound was appealing to Top 40 radio, helping bring the format back. Add to that by 2002, the American Idol era of hits landed. The world was introduced to a young Kelly Clarkson. Her massive American Idol hit, A Moment Like This launched a solid run of pop hits for Top 40 radio, bolstered by a national hit TV show.
