Sure, swimming in the ocean can be a thrilling experience. But when you find yourself on Cape Cod.  The mere thought of taking a dip in those inviting waters can make you want it to snow.

Thanks "Jaws"!

You're standing at the edge of the Cape's pristine beaches, feeling the warmth of the sun on your skin. The scene seems idyllic. Until you realize that lurking beneath those peaceful waters are nature's ultimate predators.

You can't help but imagine rows of razor-sharp teeth and those cold, piercing eyes - doll's eyes! -  watching your every move.

The fish that swim by suddenly seem like potential appetizers, and you start to question your sanity for even considering taking a dip.

Tales of massive shadows darting through the waves make your imagination run wild. You can almost hear the famous "Jaws" theme playing in your head.

Even the locals seem to have a love-hate relationship with the ocean.

They'll regale you with tales of close encounters and heroic escapes, but their laughter often has a nervous edge.

And let's not forget the signs.

Everywhere you turn, there are warnings and reminders that you're in the domain of these formidable predators. "Shark sighting!" and "No swimming beyond this point" signs plastered along the shore act as constant reminders that you're a visitor in their realm.

Lunch, really.

Each wave crashing against your legs feels like a potential shark attack. You flinch at seaweed brushing against your skin and panic at the sight of a playful seal in the distance.

Every innocent sea creature becomes a potential threat, and your mind races with thoughts of becoming the next headline on the local news.

Yes, swimming in the ocean on the Cape is a nerve-wracking experience, where every splash and shadow fuels your imagination.

If you dare to venture into the Cape's deep blue, make sure to keep your wits about you, for the ocean's apex predators are always watching.

Don't believe me?

Discovery Shark Week On The Cape!

Discovery's Shark Week just kicked off for it's 34th year on Sunday, July 24th. One of the biggest changes in our area has been how much the identity of Cape Cod has become for the population of White Sharks! This year's Shark Week has a show that focuses on the White Sharks down on The Cape.

"Monsters of the Cape"

The Discovery description of the show says: “Shark Week Veterans Dr. Craig O’Connell and Mark Rackley dive into the great white-infested waters off of Cape Cod looking to test cutting-edge shark deterrents to help keep the waters of the Cape safe for both beachgoers and sharks, before it’s too late.”

“Great White Intersection"

Shark Week will also feature a discovery+ exclusive that focuses on Cape Cod. “Great White Intersection,” which starts streaming on Saturday, focuses on the fatal shark attack of Arthur Medici, 26, a Revere surfer who in 2018 was killed by a great white off of Newcomb Hollow Beach in Wellfleet. It was Massachusetts’ first fatal shark bite in 82 years.
