For many years, Spencer the Boston Marathon dog, was a mainstay at the yearly event. He was always there to cheer on the runners in Wellesley with his Boston Marathon flag in his mouth. He was also accompanied by fellow golden retriever Penny, who became the marathon mascots. Penny is Spencer’s niece.
Spencer and Penny were along the marathon route since 2014. Spencer first went viral back in 2018 when he was out in the rain near Ashland State Park. It was a video of him dressed in a raincoat with the flags in his mouth.
Unfortunately, Spencer the Boston Marathon dog passed away back in February, and Penny passed away seven days later. Both died of canine cancer. Spencer and Penny’s owner Rich Powers said that they’ve had a very difficult time grieving the loss of both dogs.
Well, looks like there’s a new family member for Powers, as he welcomed a new puppy named Jimmy. A nonprofit named Golden Opportunities for Independence trains therapy dogs, and reached out to offer the family a free golden retriever puppy. Rich says that Jimmy couldn’t have come at a better time for the family.
Powers say that he thinks that they will be able to train Jimmy to have him out on the marathon route, just in time for next year’s race. Good luck with the training, and can’t wait to see Jimmy out on the course!
