Is This Grilled Cheese Worthy of Being The World’s Most Expensive Sandwich?
Happy National Grilled Cheese Day!
Who doesn’t like a grilled cheese sandwich? According to an actual study. only 4% of Americans hate them, so most of us probably would like to celebrate the day with their favorite grilled cheese sandwich.
It seems like the good old fashioned grilled cheese sandwich is not good enough anymore. I remember mine on simple Wonder Bread with yellow or white Kraft American cheese singles and usually with a nice hot cup or mug of Campbell’s Tomato Soup. Now there are restaurants that have entire menus catering to the wonders of the grilled cheese sandwich.
Say Cheese!
You can find restaurants and diners coming up with all kinds of delicious over the top cheese concoctions, everything from an elevated basic white bread and American cheese to exotic cheeses with all sorts of other added ingredients like tomato, pimento, olives, green apples and what ever else. Of course, the types of breads available are also better and more varied than ever. Who wouldn’t want a grill cheese sandwich on a nice sourdough or rye?
This is going to cost a lot of cheese!
There’s a restaurant in New York City that got famous recently for their achievement of having the “Worlds Most Expensive Sandwich”, Serendipity 3 sells a grilled cheese sandwich that costs $214!
Here’s what $214 bucks gets you
The sandwich debuted back in 2014 and world wide fame or infamy. It’s back this year and if you want one you have to order it 48 hours in advance. Here’s why it costs so much.
The bread itself has Dom Perignon champagne baked into it. It’s cooked in truffle butter with edible gold flakes mixed in. And the fancy Italian cheese comes from cows that can only be milked two months out of the year. (???)
Once it’s cooked, they stick more edible gold flakes on the outside of the bread for no good reason. And it’s also served with a lobster bisque dipping sauce.
