Spooky and Smoky: LBF’s Friday Cocktail. Cheers!
It’s spooky and smoky and it’s my Friday cocktail. Cheers to the weekend!
Here’s what I like about a Smoky Old Fashioned: it LOOKS fabulous.
Also, it’s a total Halloween drink. Smoke, “boo”ze (GET IT?) and a fashionable flair.
Here’s what I don’t like about it.
You a.) have to buy a smoker and b.) you can go overboard with the smoke and then you are drinking a wet ashtray.
A word about smokers.
DO NOT buy one that’s a zillion dollars. First of all, there’s no where to put it. And you don’t use it enough to warrant the price tag. (I’m talking to you, Williams Sonoma.)
You can get a pretty cheap on on Amazon.com or check out Boston Shaker in Somerville. They may not sell one online, but call. Or pop in. Shop local, people. Also, they could definitely give you some tips on cocktail making. I love that place.
Ok, so once you get the smoker, here’s all you have to do:
Recipe courtesy of BarandDrink.com:
- 2 oz rye or bourbon
- 1 sugar cube
- 2-3 dashes Angostura bitters
- twist orange peel
- cherry or orange slice, to garnish
- large ice cube
Instructions
- Place the sugar cube and orange peel in a small bowl. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap. Lift up an edge of the plastic rap to insert the tube from the smoke infuser into the bowl. Fill the bowl with smoke then remove the tube. Let the ingredients sit for one to two minutes then release the smoke
- Muddle the smoked sugar cube with Angostura bitters in a short glass
- Add the ice cube and pour in the rye or bourbon
- Add the smoked orange and a cherry to garnish
- Similar to the small bowl, cover the glass with plastic wrap. Lift a small portion to insert he smoke infuser tube, and fill the glass with smoke. Allow to stand for one to two minutes. Remove the plastic wrap before serving.
