HYATTSVILLE, MD - JUNE 04: Pan fried eriodical cicadas, harvested in their teneral stage, are served up on June 04, 2021 in Hyattsville, Maryland. Matt Rothman and his friends prepared the insects for the Hot Ones challenge, based on a First We Feast series, of eating pan fried cicadas with increasingly hotter sauces with names like 'Tears of the Sun,' 'Eye of the Scorpion,' and 'Da'Bomb Evolution.' Billions of Magicicada periodical cicadas are emerging from the soil in the eastern United States and Midwest to molt, mate, lay eggs and die after living underground for 17 years. I realize some cultures eat insects. I know what we eat has much to do with where we grew up and how our culture fed us. I didn’t grow up eating insects so, bugs on my pizza? Not on purpose!
But apparently, thanks to the plethora of hatching cicadas, cicadas are now a pizza topping.
