Make it a Destination
Don’t just take a leaf peeping drive, pick a locale to stay overnight, and the drive to your destination becomes a beautiful multicolored ride. According to Yankee Magazine, these are some of the best places to visit in New England during the Fall.
The Mount Washington Cog Railway: Built in 1869, the only mountain climbing cog in the world and currently the only operating one in the U.S., this historical ride can provide you with amazing views.
Mount Greylock State Reservation: At 3,491 feet, Mount Greylock is the highest point in Massachusetts. From its peak on a clear day, you can see as far as 90 miles away. No matter when you visit, there’s plenty to do and see.
Vermont Icelandic Horse Farm: Offering lodging, treks and trail rides, this is one stop you’ll never forget.

Let’s face it, there’s probably no better way to be among the trees than on a train. Get out from behind the wheel, sit back and relax and take in the views. View the full list of railways from Yankee Magazine.
Downeast Scenic Railroad: Leaving out of Ellsworth, Maine, this scenic 10-mile round-trip ride, allows you to view uninterrupted foliage. This is also a recommended trip for bird lovers, as passengers will see wildlife abound.
Cape Cod Central Railroad: Partake in one of their “Oktoberfest” tours and breathtaking ride through one of the most beautiful areas of Massachusetts.
Green Mountain Railroad: Possibly the most “New England” of your choices, you’ll pass quaint towns and villages, rural farms, covered bridges and so much more on any trip you take.
