Delta Dental says the average payout for a tooth is $3.70, down 43 cents since last year.

Values also depend on where in the US people live. Kids in western states earned $4.13 per tooth, while those in the east got $3.75. The south did a little better at $3.91, while poor midwesterners only found $2.97 under their pillows.

The bright point in the research shows losing that first tooth is lucrative, pulling in $4.96 today versus $4.50 last year.
