September 26, 1969: Beatles Release ‘Abbey Road’
Abbey Road is one of rock’s most iconic albums for many reasons, but it is perhaps best known for being the final album The Beatles recorded together.
While containing the classic “Come Together,” Abbey Road is often recognized for its contributions from George Harrison, who wrote and sang lead vocals on “Here Comes the Sun” and “Something,” which also happens to be the first number one single from The Beatles to not be written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney.
…And who can forget about that album cover, not to mention the fuel it added to the “Paul is dead” lore?! Obviously, Paul is alive and well, as is the practice of tourists recreating the cover image on a daily basis. The album topped the Billboard charts for 12 weeks, went on to be the biggest selling album of 1969 and sold millions of copies in the decades to follow, but if the album were summed up in just one sentence, it would be, “And in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make.”
