"Hey Jude" was released on August 26, 1968 and spent nine consecutive weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard charts in the United States. Clocking in at over seven minutes, half of which is Paul McCartney singing "na na na na na na na," the track was also the longest song by the band to reach the top position. According to author Bob Spitz, McCartney wrote the song to "serve as a hopeful message" to bandmate John Lennon's son Julian after his parents split.
