Last night, pulling into the driveway at our new house, it was almost a disaster.
While the main roads were fine, the back roads, at least where we live were a SHEET OF ICE. Even though I have an all wheel drive, it wasn't enough.
My driveway entrance is at the bottom of small hill. With the roads like an ice rink, I could feel the car begin to slide out of control, on the road leading to my house, which is on a HILL. Even driving at a very very slow speed I knew that trouble was ahead. At 8:30 pm, the streets were not sanded yet.
I then remembered what my Dad taught me when I was a new driver: "If you're on a hill, and you begin to lose control on an icy road, turn your right side of the cars wheels into the snow on the SIDE of the road, putting both right wheels into the snow on side of road. (If there's room of course.) At least you'll have the right side of the car in traction, and then ease down the road." The hard frozen snow acted as if it was pavement, keeping the car straight, as I creeped into my driveway.
Dad passed away in 2002, but he was with me last night.
Thanks Dad.
